Farmer Mary has to make room for baby chicks and ducklings and other babies this Spring. If you have ever considered a bunny or guinea pig as a pet, Winterpast Farm is the place to go. You can buy, rent, exchange and return….Right now friendly guinea pigs and bunnies are only $10 which is half the usual price. Farmer Mary is planning a rabbit expansion with more varieties starting this Spring.

Meanwhile, Lizzie Lou the goat is STILL pregnant…rounder daily.

Big Mama the pig is a good mother and occasionally lets us hold a baby a while.

Baby bunnies are multiplying and getting ready for Easter and other Spring photography…schedule your visit soon and pick out your favorite bunny. There are plenty to hold.

Farmer Mary is getting a new dog, a stray rescued through Animal Control of Wake County…she and her children are still working on coming up with the right name. Come see him soon! Here he is at his foster home. Hope to bring him to the farm within the week. What alot of new smells he’s going to enjoy there!

Feel free to bring donations of food for her-she loves dog food, veggies, cherry pie, collards…so far Farmer Mary hasn’t found anything she won’t eat except Vanilla yogurt.

BIG MAMA is doing great. The piglets are thriving and enjoying getting outside on nice days.

“BABY BUMP”GROWING DAILY…

Just when Farmer Mary thinks Lizzie Lou can’t get any wider and birth is sure to be soon, Lizzie Lou fools her. Today while Farmer Mary was away awhile, Lizzie sneaked into the house and tried to update this blog herself-really, signs of goat were on the desk and keyboard! Internet issues have been a problem but Farmer Mary will try her best to keep photos and updates coming. Here’s a photo from yesterday…Farmer Mary is in front of a pile of over 150 Christmas Trees gathered for an annual bonfire/potluck.

JUSTIN BIEBER (THE YOUNG PEACOCK) gets prettier (more handsome I guess Farmer Mary should say) daily…he’s been practicing putting up his feathers to impress the ladies this Spring.

A BOUNTY OF BABY BUNNIES

Bunnies, as you all know, multiply at an amazing rate…here’s the latest (three of four) born at the farm who would love to be cuddled by YOU.Farmer Mary has big plans to open a proper “Rabbitry” called RAINBOW RABBITRY this Spring where you can hold, rent, and adopt bunnies of all ages. Stay tuned for updates.Photos thanks to son, Ben’s, best friend, Colton Cockman who yesterday spent the afternoon photographing and helping out at Winterpast Farm.

If you’ve visited the farm you’ve seen the old vans Farmer Mary’s’ brother stores in the back pasture. He had grand plans for one day….Here’s the new (old) red van just donated for Farmer Mary to fix up as rabbit housing…come help Farmer Mary paint the outside and fix up the inside!

Lizzie Lou, the goat, is due to birth soon and getting rounder dailyThe emu nest has 8 gorgeous eggs now-this photo is a day old with only 7, but you get the idea. Looks like a dinosaur nest to most visitors! Perhaps this year, Oscar Lulu, the Dad Emu will set on the eggs long enough for some to hatch!Winterpast Farm is open every day over Christmas break- best way to get in touch to schedule a visit is to text Farmer Mary at 244-1800 or email marymomfarmer@hotmail.com. Baby bunnies need holding and more coming soon. Justin Beiber the peacock is gorgeous with his mature tail feathers growing longer daily. Goose and duck eggs available most days for sale for your holiday baking…they really are better than chicken eggs!

Our pot bellied pig, Big Mama, had her babies five days early at Winterpast Farm…she’d been hanging out in the garage under a table on a pile of feed bags for a few days. Meanwhile, Farmer Mary made plans for a lovely birthing place, first in the barn, then closer to the house…then, suprise! Yesterday late afternoon Farmer Mary and her daughter, Elizabeth, were putting wood in the outdoor woodstove (we always need more wood by the way!) and heard loud squeals. Mother pigs are known for stepping on and laying on newborns while they labor to produce more…we ran to the garage and found piglets…the count was unclear and we had some runts and the usual sadness amongst the joy, but most are doing well this morning. The garage was not the plan, so Farmer Mary is hurrying to fix the space for temporarily housing the new family. Big Mama had a big breakfast with extra liquids and most of the piglets look great. Here’s a newborn photo from last night. A HUGE thanks to Elaina Fouts and her Mom who helped with warming and then latching on the babies, Josh who happened by when Farmer Mary was in the midst of everything, daughter Elizabeth who helped with runts and one hurt baby, and dear friend Michelle Tilley and her sons who left the line to see Santa Claus at the mall to rush to my aid. Michelle has one piglet at her house who needed surgery after, we think, being stepped on soon after birth.

Piglets won’t be available to hold for a few days but quick visits, and food offerings (Big Mama loves anything including canned dog food) are welcome.

Farmer Mary is scheduling group and family bonfires and campouts at Winterpast Farm…however, no guarantees regarding the exact time in the morning that the roosters will start to crow! Where else can you camp with a llama? Those fresh eggs in the morning are really special.

Back pasture is also great for youth events, Scouts, movie nights, paint ball and other games. The entire 10 acres is fenced, so no worries about anyone wandering off. Plenty of parking and we can run electricity pretty far back.

OTHER FARM NEWS: “Lizzie Lou” the goat is getting really wide. Her husband “Henry” has left to be herd sire at another farm. I’m thinking she’ll have twins or triplets…probably in late November or early December. Drop by the farm if you ever clean out your frig or cupboards and throw some food over the fence. She’s always hungry these days!

Mother Muscovy duck has been setting for quite a while under my Lantana bush in the front yard…Farmer Mary didn’t’ notice the day she started to set since she’s hidden behind a shrub, so didn’t get the date in her calender, but she is due to hatch ducklings any time now…we are all looking forward to her parading around with them. She has a great husband who seriously guards the nest whenever she steps away for food or water. She is setting on 12 eggs.

Both “Justin Beiber” the young peacock, and “Joseph” the older male, are growing their fancy tail feathers (which they lose at the end of the summer)back in at an astounding rate. The colors on Justin’s tail are nearly neon green. He’s from an egg Farmer Mary bought at another farm so is of uncertain heritage so we are all curious to see what he looks like with his mature feathers. This is the year he’ll finally get his really long tail feathers. The better to impress “Rachel” the peahen with, he hopes.

“Barnabas” the donkey is moving to another farm where he will be the first animal for a family just starting out on 10 acres. I think he’ll enjoy being babied. Farmer Mary is looking for a pony or mini horse for riding and hopes to start a “pony club” of sorts for children to learn to care for the animals. Stay tuned….or, if YOU want to buy a pony for your child and keep it at the farm, please let her know.

A few months ago, the pink “Wilbur” pigs knocked over a bunny cage several times so six ruby-eyed, half angora bunnies have been roaming the farm ever since quite happily. Farmer Mary has been amazed to not find millions of baby bunnies (she envisioned having to change the name of the farm from “Winterpast” to “White Bunny Farm”). Then, last week a little girl visitor pointed out a white baby bunny (about 5 weeks old) under a red building in the front yard. Four more have been sighted, four all white, and one with dark ears and a spot. Two have been caught by visitors and loved on a while. It’s too early to take them from their Mom since their age is unsure, but eventually, in a few weeks, Farmer Mary plans to bring them inside and they will be available in the new “Rent a Rabbit” program where you can take a bunny home (with cage and all supplies) for $20 a week.
